Let the bells ring - Hello Port Hope Simpson, we are here!!!

Welcome to Port Hope Simpson, and The Church of St. Andrew the Apostle
Port Hope Simpson is located in southeastern Labrador, on the south side of the Alexis River.  It was founded in 1934 as a logging camp and has since become the largest community in southeastern Labrador.   After a sawmill and townsite was built at Alexis River in 1934, it was named Port Hope Simpson after the Commissioner of Natural Resources, Sir John Hope Simpson.  The logging station hired several Hundred loggers from nearby communities and unemployed men were brought in from the Newfoundland Island.

St. Lewis is the most easterly permanent community on the North American mainland and is one of the best locations on Labrador Coastal  Drive to see icebergs! It is one of the earliest recorded place names in all of Labrador.  It was depicted on a map as early as 1502.  Its recorded history begins in the early 18th Century when its sheltered location, proximity to good fishing grounds and seal migration routes made it a desired location for the English based migratory fishery.  Not only was it a favorite place for fishing, but it also was a good place to construct small boats and early establishments left crews to winter there for this purpose.

St. Petes, cartwight
Welcome to Cartwright, and St. Peter's Anglican Church
Established in 1775, Cartwright was named after Captain George Cartwright. He was an English merchant and adventurer who established a fish and fur trading business. The settlement of Cartwright provided him with an excellent sheltered harbour and FlagStaff Hill gave him a lookout point from which he could look for privateers. It's located on the southeast coast with a population of around 550 people and its main industry is the crab fishery.
